SEER: What Does It Mean?
All City Heat and Air • Aug 08, 2023

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This universal rating system helps you determine the efficiency of your North Carolina   air conditioning (AC) unit or heat pump

It’s quite similar to miles per gallon—the higher a car’s MPG, the more efficient the car. Similarly, the higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the heating or cooling system. The number comes from dividing the total amount of heat removed from your home by the total amount of energy consumed.

Check the yellow EnergyGuide® sticker on your air conditioner. Does it have a SEER rating of 10 or lower? If so, you may want to consider upgrading. Modern air conditioners use much less energy. In fact, federal law requires a rating of 14 or higher for air conditioning units manufactured in 2015 and onward.

Had your AC for 15 years or longer? Instead of shelling out money for the next repair, consider replacing your unit with a high-efficiency model. You could reduce energy costs up to 50 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Looking to upgrade your comfort? All City Heat & Air  is pleased to give you an accurate estimate on your new AC, heat pump, furnace, or boiler. Additionally, some high-efficiency models come with generous tax rebates. You can count on our team to find the best savings for you.

When Should I Replace My Air Conditioner?

Besides being less efficient to begin with, older AC units tend to struggle once they reach a certain age of about 10 to 15 years. As the internal parts begin to wear out, your cooling system has to work twice as hard to produce the same amount of temperature control.

In addition to higher utility bills, you might start to notice other symptoms. Inconsistent cooling and humidity issues are both red flags. If you’re spending excessively on energy or repair costs, replacement is usually the more cost-effective option.

Other Efficiency Factors

Remember, you’ll fully realize the benefits of owning a high SEER unit if it’s operating in an ideal environment. That means your home should be well-insulated, and the ductwork must be free of leaks to avoid energy loss.

Your air conditioner must be adequately sized for your home. Oversized units use too much energy, while undersized units overwork themselves. That’s why All City Heat & Air performs an in-home consultation before any installation. Our experts will take precise measurements and load calculations to find a climate control system perfectly tailored to your home needs.
